Background

Insect farming is considered as an opportunity to develop bioeconomy business ideas and to producte protein for food and feed. There are millions of insect species in the world and at least some 2000 insect species are suitable for human consumption. However, in Europe, the main focus has been on about ten to twenty species, such as house cricket, mealworm or black soldier fly.

Business ideas can be related to the rearing and use of insects as food, feed or related businesses as well as to circular economy. Because insect rearing is a novel business in Europe, there is a need to develop, share and disseminate state of the art information related to insect rearing. Information is needed, among other things, on nutrition and rearing techniques of insects, ensuring food safety and health if insects, and how consumers and food sector operators view edible insects. Challenges and opportunities related to automation of insect rearing as well as regulations concerning edible insects as novel food also need to be addressed.

The Nordic countries are well advanced in insect business. ENTOLAB project ad NJF are organizing a nordic seminar on Nordic seminar on insects for food, feed and circular economy. The purpose of this seminar is to share information and discuss about possibilities and prospects of insect rearing in the Nordic countries.

ENTOLAB aims at developing and boosting business based on insect rearing in South Ostrobothnia in collaboration with local businesses. The project has received support from the Rural development programme for the mainland Finland 2014-2020.
