UNIC COURSE FOR ROAD SAFETY PROFESSIONALS
Traffic Conflict Technique is a unic course for road safety professionals. Conflict studies give more detailed information than accident analyses among others about the cause of the appearance of the situations. The conflicts not only reflect the number of accidents but also their nature. The development of the events in a conflict is almost identical to the one of a compatible accident. Therefore the observations can be used as a base for the explanation of how the accidents occur. The Conflict technique allows us to study the "dangers" in traffic in a relatively simple form. It is an effective instrument for finding effective measures fast. In combination with other analysis methods (observation of behaviour, interviews) it helps to study traffic safety in the first place within built-up areas. With help of the Conflict technique it is possible to get a picture of the risks at a site after only 3-5 days of conflict studies and to give proposals for countermeasures. It is also a good tool to follow immediately the countermeasures to see if they worked efficiently.
The course will cover theory and practice of performing traffic conflict observations according to the Swedish traffic conflict technique method. Moreover, the participants will get acquainted with the recent developments in the broader area of the surrogate measures of safety, including modifications of the ‘classical’ technique to the modern traffic conditions and use of video recordings and specialised video analysis software to assist in data collection and processing.
The course includes lectures, practical experience of field and video-based conflicts observations and interactive sessions with the tutor where the found conflicts are discussed in a broader context of road safety. After the course completion, the participants receive a Conflict Observer Certificate, a proof of qualifications for independent planning and performing of traffic conflict studies.
